Bangladesh's central bank says it fired Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus from his position as the head of microlender Grameen Bank, following allegations of irregularities in its operations.
Grameen Bank, however, said in a statement that Yunus is still serving as its managing director and that it plans to fight the decision.
Yunus was the founder of Grameen Bank and has been its managing director since 2000.
He has been under attack from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government since late last year after a Norwegian documentary alleged Grameen Bank was dodging taxes.
His supporters say he is being discredited by the government because he tried to set up a political party back in 2007.
