The Afghan military says a man in an Afghan Army uniform opened fire on a group of Americans at a military base in the south of the country, killing one U.S. soldier and wounding another.
Spokesman Mohammad Zahir Azimi said the gunman was also killed in the shootout on January 8 at a base in Zabul province.
He said an investigation is trying to determine whether the gunman was a member of the Afghan military.
A statement issued by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) shortly after the shooting said only that a coalition service member had been killed in an incident, apparently by an Afghan soldier. Unlike the Afghan authorities, however, it did not reveal the victim's nationality.
It is the latest in a series of similar occurrences in which ISAF soldiers have been killed in shootouts with Afghan soldiers, or gunmen in Afghan uniform.
