In the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta, hundreds of people continued a sit-in protest for the third consecutive day in response to the January 3 killing of 11 Shi’ite Hazara coal miners. The Islamic State (IS) extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack. Among the mourners and protesters were women and children who spent the previous night in their makeshift camp in sub-freezing temperatures.
