Chinese President Hu Jintao has arrived in the U.S. city of Chicago, his only stop during his American tour outside of the capital, Washington.
In a speech on January 20 in Chicago, Hu urged the United States to ease restrictions on high-technology exports to China, saying this will help increase U.S. exports to China.
In a speech in Washington earlier in the day, Hu said China has no interest in pursuing an arms race or exerting military dominance over other nations.
He also urged "mutual respect" and cooperation, but warned the United States to respect Beijing's sovereignty over Taiwan and Tibet.
U.S. congressional lawmakers who met with the Chinese president said they had pressed him on human rights and trade concerns and had also urged China to take a firmer line in dealing with Chinese ally North Korea and the North's nuclear program.
