Guardians Council Denies Reports It Might Disqualify Rohani

Hassan Rohani

Iran's Guardians Council, which supervises the country's electoral process, has denied media reports it might disqualify one of the eight candidates running in the June 14 presidential election.

A council spokesman said the body is not reviewing the qualifications of any of the candidates.

Iranian media on June 9 reported that the Guardians Council might disqualify former nuclear negotiator Hassan Rohani, a centrist who has made statements critical of the country's controversial nuclear program.

Rohani has said the program -- which much of the international communty suspects is aimed at developing nuclear weapons -- has harmed Iran's economy.

In addition, supporters at Rohani's campaign appearances have chanted for the release of political prisoners.
