The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has dismissed an Iranian offer for access to a region where explosives experiments are suspected of being carried out for the development of nuclear weapons.
The UN nuclear watchdog says the offer by Iran does not address its main concerns.
Iran told an IAEA board meeting in November that it would let IAEA inspectors visit the western Marivan area to prove suspicions about atomic bomb research there are wrong and baseless.
IAEA spokesman Serge Gas says the IAEA has “explained clearly to Iran – on more than one occasion – that an offer of a visit” to Marivan "does not help address specific concerns related to the issue of large-scale high explosive experiments.”
Instead, the IAEA wants access to the Parchin military base southeast of Tehran.
Iran continues to refuse access to Parchin, saying it is a convention military facility.
