The funeral for an Iranian general killed in Iraq while advising local forces has been held in Tehran on December 29.
Iranian state television reported that the body of Brigadier General Hamid Taghavi will be taken for burial in his hometown of Ahvaz, in southeastern Iran.
A statement from Iran's Revolutionary Guards on December 28 said, "Brigadier General Hamid Taghavi was martyred during a mission to advise the army and Iraqi volunteers…in the city of Samarra," north of Baghdad.
Iranian state media reported Taghavi was killed by a sniper.
On December 29, posts on jihadist Internet forums claimed Taghavi had been killed by Islamic State (IS) fighters.
Tehran has acknowledged sending advisers to Iraq to help combat the IS militant group and to Syria to help fight the IS and other antigovernment forces battling the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Iran is not cooperating with U.S.-led coalition forces attacking IS targets in Iraq and Syria.
