The commander of Iran's navy says that it will begin six days of naval drills in the Strait of Hormuz at the end of this week.
On December 25, the state-run IRNA news agency quoted Admiral Habibollah Sayyari as saying that "Velayat 91" maneuvers will begin on December 28 and will be held across an area of about 1 million square kilometers in the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman, and northern parts of the Indian Ocean.
He said warships, submarines, and missile defense systems will be used and tested during the exercise.
About one third of the world's oil trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait if it came under military attack over its disputed nuclear program.
