Rohani Says Syria Unrest Part of 'Plot'

Iranian President Hassan Rohani

Iranian President Hassan Rohani says the ongoing conflict in Syria, as well as continued unrest in Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, and Bahrain, are "chains of a single plot" to benefit Israel.

Iranian state television reported September 16 that Rohani told a meeting of commanders of the hard-line Revolutionary Guards that the aim of the uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East was to "consolidate Israel and its power" and to weaken anti-Western, anti-Israeli fronts in the region, where Iran and Syria support Lebanon's Hizballah and the Palestinian group Hamas.

Rohani said the two-year conflict in Syria "is not about which person should be president" and added that, for Iran, it does not matter who Syria's president is.

"Whoever Syrian citizens vote for to rule their country, we'll agree with it," Rohani said.
