EU To Discuss Iran Ties After British Attacks

Iranian hard-line supporters stormed the British Embassy in Tehran on November 29.

European relations with Iran are expected to be discussed at a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

The meeting in Brussels, Belgium, comes one day after Britain expelled Iranian diplomats in response to Iranian Islamist student hard-liner attacks on British compounds in Tehran, including the British Embassy.

Several EU countries, including France, Germany and the Netherlands, have said they are recalling their envoys from Tehran for consultations in response to the November 29 violence in the Iranian capital.

Reports say the EU ministers may consider further measures against the Islamic
Republic in response to the storming of the British buildings, which resulted in property damage but no injuries to staff.

The EU ministers are also expected to discuss a recent report by the United Nations nuclear watchdog agency saying Iran had carried out tests apparently related to the development of a nuclear weapon.

Iran's government has expressed regret about what it called the "unacceptable behavior" of the protesters, whose attacks began during an anti-British demonstration apparently authorized by the authorities.

The Iranian government has denied any connection to the demonstration. But Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani said on November 30 that the "wrath" of the attackers was the result of "several decades of domination-seeking behavior by Britain."
