Iraq Executes Saddam Hussein's Personal Secretary

Iraq's Justice Ministry says the former personal secretary to the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein has been executed.

Ministry spokesman Haider al-Saadi said Abed Hamid Hmoud, who was also Saddam's chief bodyguard, was executed by hanging on June 7. He said Hmoud was executed for his participation in genocide.

Hmoud was the latest of a number of former senior officials who have been executed by Iraqi authorities since the toppling of Saddam during the U.S.-led invasion of 2003.

Hmoud was among 15 high-profile defendants who were tried for their role in the brutal crushing of a Shi'ite uprising after the 1991 Gulf War.

He was captured in June 2003 and sentenced to death in October 2010.

Saddam was himself executed by hanging on December 31, 2006.
