Ethnic Turkoman Iraqis took up arms to fight radical Sunni militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on June 20 near the town of Basheer outside Kirkuk. Volunteers fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons at the insurgents' positions as many Turkoman families fled the area after days of violence. (RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq)
