U.S. Soldier Killed By Roadside Bomb In Iraq

Iraqi forces hold a position as they advance toward the Islamic State group's stronghold of Hawija on September 30.

A U.S. soldier in the coalition fighting against the extremist group Islamic State (IS) has been killed and another wounded in a roadside bombing in Iraq, the Pentagon says.

An earlier statement on October 2 said that an improvised explosive device struck their vehicle the day before, without giving the names and nationalities of the casualties.

The United States, France, Britain, and other coalition countries have deployed military personnel in Iraq to train and advise Iraqi and Kurdish forces fighting the IS group since 2014. The coalition is also conducting air strikes.

Seven U.S. personnel have been reported killed in the fight against IS militants in Iraq. A French soldier was also killed last month, although it is not known if he died in Iraq or neighboring Syria.

IS fighters, who captured large swathes of Syrian and Iraqi territory in 2014, have suffered a number of major setbacks in recent months.
