Iraqi Kurdish fighters reestablished control over the area around Sinjar on December 20 and 21 after breaking the siege of Sinjar Mountain, where thousands of minority Yazidis had sought refuge from Islamic State militants. Fighters flashed victory signs and flew the Kurdish flag as locals greeted them with cheers. The town of Sinjar was reported to be mostly under Kurdish and Yazidi control. (Reuters)
