Iraqi Arab Politician Gunned Down In Kirkuk

Gunmen shot dead a prominent Arab official in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, police said on December 1.

Mohammed al-Jubouri, head of the Arab bloc in the Kirkuk provincial council, was killed in his car while travelling near his home in a central neighborhood, police said.

Jubouri's wife was wounded in the incident. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the killing.

Forces from Iraq's semiautonomous Kurdistan region took full control of Kirkuk in mid-2014 after federal government troops abandoned the city in the face of an onslaught by the Islamic State (IS) group.

Kurdish leaders say they will never give up the city, which they claim, along with Turkomans and Arabs.

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Arabs have been displaced to Kirkuk from other areas of northern and western Iraq seized by IS, exacerbating ethnic tensions in the city.
