The Islamabad high court on June 3 overturned a treason conviction against former Prime Minister Imran Khan, although the Pakistani opposition leader remains imprisoned on other charges. Khan had rejected the conviction, saying it was handed down to prevent him from running in the February elections. Khan, who was ousted from power in a no-confidence vote in April 2022, has more than 170 legal cases hanging over him, including graft charges while he was premier between 2018-22. The court also overturned the conviction against Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a deputy in Khan’s Pakistan Tehrik-e Insaf (PTI) party.
