A senior Israeli security official has confirmed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to Russia to discuss the situation in Syria with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Energy and Water Minister Silvan Shalom, a member of Israel's security cabinet, told state radio on May 12 that Israel is determined to stop Russia's reported plan to sell S-300 antimissile batteries to the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
He said such a sale would change the balance of forces in the region and make it more difficult for countries "seeking change in Syria" to take action.
The Kremlin says talks will take place between Putin and Netanyahu in Russia on May 14 and that the conflict in Syria will top the agenda.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has said any sale of S-300s would be "potentially destabilizing."
