Former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier -- the first man to beat the legendary Muhammad Ali -- has died at the age of 67.

Frazier's death on November 7 was announced by his family.

Just days ago, it was announced that Frazier was receiving care in the northeastern city of Philadelphia after being diagnosed with liver cancer.

Frazier, nicknamed "Smokin' Joe," was the first boxer to beat Muhammad Ali, in 1971, in a bout known as the "Fight of the Century."

Ali would come back to beat Frazier in two later fights in the 1970s.

Frazier won the world heavyweight title in 1970 with a knockout of Jimmy Ellis. He lost the title in 1973 when he was beaten by George Foreman.

Ukrainian-born world heavyweight champions Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko today paid tribute to the late champion, saying, "My brother and I are very sad about the death of Joe Frazier."

Between them, the Klitschkos currently dominate the heavyweight category.
