Karzai Says He Advises Afghan President 'Almost Daily'

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai says he meets with his successor, Ashraf Ghani, nearly every day and gives him advice on important issues.

Karzai said in an interview with Reuters on December 31 that he and Ghani are meeting "very, very often" and that on important issues for the Afghan people, "I'll be there."

Ghani spokesman Nazifullah Salarzai confirmed that the two leaders meet "on a regular basis" and that Ghani seeks Karzai's advice on "most national and international issues."

Karzai, who was president from 2004 to 2014, said his lifestyle had changed little since leaving office in September and that he often hosts tribal and religious leaders as well as lawmakers to discuss current issues.

Karzai, 57, also urged Afghans to be patient as Ghani and his chief executive officer, Abdullah Abdullah, work to form a government.
