ASTANA -- A glowing biography of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev by a former British cabinet minister has been published in Kazakh, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.
The book, by Jonathan Aitken, is entitled "Nazarbayev and the Making of Kazakhstan: From Communism to Capitalism." A Russian translation published in 2009 sparked mixed reactions, both in Kazakhstan and abroad.
Aitken was reported present at the book launch ceremony in Astana today.
Aitken said in 2009 that his book was an attempt to highlight the achievements of a man treated unfairly by the West. Talking to RFE/RL in July that year, Aitken said that he wrote the truth about a man who was born in a traditional Kazakh nomadic yurt and achieved the position and authority he enjoys now.
In 1999, Aitken spent seven months in jail in Britain for perjury after lying under oath in court during a libel action against a newspaper.
