A court in Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty, has sentenced noted opposition activist Aset Abishev to 15 days in jail just days before this weekend's early presidential election. Abishev’s sentence was handed down on November 16 after the court found him guilty of violating laws on public gatherings. Opposition and rights activists have complained in recent days that Kazakh authorities have ratcheted up pressure on them as the November 20 vote nears.
