Kazakh Prison Guards Jailed For Torturing Inmate To Death

ASTANA -- More than a dozen prison guards and high-ranking prison officials in Kazakhstan have been convicted of torturing an inmate and sentenced to prison.

A military court in the central city of Zheqazghan sentenced a high-ranking official and his two subordinates at a labor camp in the city to six years in jail on August 29.

Two other prison guards received five year prison terms while eight others got five-year suspended sentences.

The court found that the group had for hours severely beaten an inmate in October last year. They then crucified the already dying inmate on a metal fence.

Kazakhstan’s military prosecutor-general has personally supervised investigations.

International and domestic human rights activists have been protesting against violations of prisoners' rights in Kazakhstan for years.
