Two Former Top Kazakh Judges Detained For Suspected Corruption

Musabek Alimbekov

ASTANA -- Two former Kazakh Supreme Court judges have been taken into detention in Astana on suspicion of corruption, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Prosecutor-General's Office spokesman Zhandos Omiraliev told journalists in Astana today that Almas Tashenova and Sauletbek Dzhakishev were taken into custody after a court order was issued.

The two were among six judges dismissed by the Senate earlier this month while acting on a request from the financial police.

President Nursultan Nazarbaev told the Senate on April 15 that after the judges were dismissed and an investigation into alleged financial abuses launched, Supreme Court Chairman Musabek Alimbekov tendered his resignation.

Bektas Beknazarov, chairman of the Aqtobe regional court in northwestern Kazakhstan, was named to replace him.

The four other former judges charged with financial abuse -- Marlen Kamnazarov, Marziya Baltabai, Bakhytzhan Zhaqypov, and Maqsut Adilkhair -- are not in detention pending the results of the investigation.
