U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Bangladesh on August 29 for talks with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about fighting Islamist extremists following a wave of deadly attacks.
Kerry also was expected to meet with civic and opposition leaders during his one-day visit.
It is Kerry first visit to the Muslim-majority nation, which faced an attack on a cafe in July that killed 22 people, mostly foreigners.
Just hours before Kerry's arrival, Bangladesh police shot dead two suspected members of a local extremist group blamed for the attack -- Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
Police say the suspected militants, including a regional JMB commander, were killed during a battle with security forces in the northern town of Sherpur.
Talks between the United States and Bangladesh have intensified in recent months, with Washington engaging with Bangladesh police and military forces.
