U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is due to hold talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on the second day of his visit to Afghanistan aimed at boosting the democratic process.
Kerry -- who met separately with feuding Afghan presidential candidates Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah on August 7 -- said he also hopes to hold a joint meeting with the two men.
Kerry is working to get Ghani and Abdullah to agree to accept the results of an ongoing audit of the votes from June's presidential runoff election and agree to form a unity government.
The audit was necessitated after Abdullah charged that large-scale fraud had been undertaken in Ghani's favor.
Abdullah won the first-round of the election with 45 percent of the vote.
Kerry is urging Ghani and Abdullah to resolve the situation before a NATO summit on September 4.
