Kerry, Steinmeier Urge Political Solution In Syria

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry

The foreign ministers of Germany and the United States have agreed to boost their countries' efforts to cope with Europe's ongoing refugee crisis and to end the civil war in Syria.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met in Berlin on September 20 with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Steinmeier said there was "a political and moral duty" to end the violence in Syria.

For his part, Kerry said the United States has already taken in 70,000 Syrian refugees and will take another 15,000 in the 2015 fiscal year, which begins next month.

For its part, Germany has said it could take up to 1 million refugees this year.

Steinmeier said he appreciated Kerry's communication with Moscow on Syria and added that Saudi Arabia and Iran should also be involved in a solution to the crisis there.
