U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Geneva on May 1 to discuss the conflict in Syria with his counterparts from Jordan and Saudi Arabia and with the UN special envoy for Syria.
The State Department announced on April 30 that Kerry plans to "review ongoing efforts to reaffirm the cessation of hostilities" in Syria.
Also on April 30, a Russian Foreign Ministry official said Moscow had rejected a U.S. request to pressure the Syrian government to extend the truce to the embattled city of Aleppo.
"One must understand that the situation in Aleppo is part of the fight against the terrorist threat," Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said.
The same day, Qatar called for an "emergency" meeting of the Arab League in Cairo to discuss Syria and "the dangerous escalation in the city of Aleppo."
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, some 250 civilians have been killed in government air strikes and crossfire between government and rebel forces around Aleppo since April 22.
