U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif held an impromptu meeting at a United Nations gathering of world leaders October 2 to discuss Syria and carrying out the Iran nuclear deal.
Kerry and Zarif sent their advisers out of the room to meet alone, then left separately without commenting.
U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said the two were "taking advantage of their presence in New York" to discuss carrying out the Iran deal. It was the second time they met there this week.
An Iranian official said Kerry and Zarif also discussed the crisis in Syria and Russian air strikes against rebels fighting the Syrian government.
The United States has sought to enlist Iran in trying to find a way forward on the Syria crisis after Russia launched its air war.
