Iraq’s Kurdistan regional government says it has provided military assistance to Syrian Kurdish forces who are battling Islamic State militants in the town of Kobani.
But Esmat al-Sheikh, head of Kobani's defense council, said on October 14 that the border town's Syrian Kurdish defenders have not yet received any weaponry or ammunition.
Alan Othman, spokesman for the Syrian Kurdish military council in the Kobani area, said the shipment was "symbolic" and was stuck in the province of Al-Jazeera in northeast Syria.
Othman said the shipment included ammunition for light weapons and mortar shells.
But he said Turkey would not open a transit corridor for deliveries into Kobani -- which is bordered by Turkey on the north and is surrounded by IS militants on the south, east, and west.
French President Francois Hollande on October 14 urged “all countries concerned” to arm those fighting IS militants.
