EU To Appoint Legal Expert To Investigate Kosovo Mission

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini says she will name an independent legal expert to look into corruption allegations at the European Union's mission in Kosovo.

Mogherini, who took office this week, told a news conference in Brussels that the expert will "review the mission's mandate implementation, with a particular focus on allegations of corruption."

Mogherini said the expert has yet to be selected.

Kosovo media reports say at least two employees of the mission, known as EULEX, were being investigated on suspicion of dropping criminal charges in at least three cases in return for bribes.

The cases included murder and corruption involving a number of senior state officials.

EULEX, created in 2008, aims to help Kosovo develop its justice system and deals with sensitive cases of organized crime, corruption, and war crimes.
