Kyrgyz authorities say they have shut down 39 mosques and 21 religious educational organizations in the Osh region. The press service of Kyrgyzstan's State Committee of National Security said the move followed an investigation that revealed noncompliance with the law on religious freedom and religious organizations, construction standards, hygiene, and fire safety. No further information was immediately available. According to official information, there are around 2,600 mosques, more than 100 madrasahs, and 10 Islamic higher schools in Kyrgyzstan.
