KYIV -- Kyiv City Council says Mayor Leonid Chernovetskyy is back on the job after an absence of several weeks, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.
Council spokeswoman Olha Tuniy told journalists that Chernovetskyy had been back in the office since February 7. She did not say where Chernovetskyy was during his absence.
Local media reported in December that Chernovetskyy disappeared shortly after he was ousted in November as head of the Kyiv city administration and replaced by a senior municipal official, Oleksandr Popov.
Chernovetskyy retained the title of Kyiv mayor, a separate, less-powerful position.
On January 27, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov urged Popov to find Chernovetskyy and bring him back to work.
Tuniy was asked today regarding Chernovetskyy's possible presence at a session of the Kyiv City Council scheduled for February 10. She said the session had been postponed until February 17 and that it was too early to talk about Chernovetskyy's participation.
