OSH, Kyrgyzstan – The sports chief in Kyrgyzstan's southern city of Osh has “temporarily resigned” amid allegations that he shot an athlete, the city administration says.
Spokesman Azamat Absattarov told RFE/RL on February 17 that Kylychbek Sarkarbaev’s duties will remain suspended while the investigation into the allegation is ongoing.
The move comes after local athlete Rakhmanberdi Uulu on February 14 accused Sarkarbaev of shooting him in the leg.
Sarkarbaev, head of the Sport Committee in the mayor's office in Osh, told RFE/RL at the time that the claim might have been motivated by "other people's interests." He did not elaborate.
