Kyrgyz Government Launches Anticorruption Website

BISHKEK -- The Kyrgyz government has launched a special website to enable citizens to report instances of corruption, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

First Deputy Prime Minister Omurbek Babanov told journalists that the government, the Prosecutor-General's office, and police will check every case reported on the anticorr.gov.kg site. If a report proves true, the appropriate measures will be taken.

"Corruption is afraid of transparency. Since our current government started its work, 22 million soms ($463,000) have been added to the state treasury, money that used to be hidden before," Babanov said.

Kyrgyzstan ranked near the bottom, at number 164, in the 2010 Corruption Perceptions Index published in October by the campaign group Transparency International.
