BISHKEK -- The Kyrgyz Prosecutor-General's Office says it has launched an investigation into reports that some newspapers have been publishing anti-Semitic and ultranationalist statements, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Deputy Prosecutor-General Ryskulbek Baktybaev told RFE/RL that over the weekend some people and organizations, whom he did not name, filed complaints that some Kyrgyz-language newspapers frequently use racist and chauvinistic vocabulary.
He said the investigation was started to determine whether those allegations are true.
President Roza Otunbaeva repeated the charges in an interview to a local radio station in Bishkek on April 29. She said the offensive slogans were very blatant.
Otunbaeva said the use of such terms in the mass media was "impermissible."
