Kyrgyz parliament speaker Akmatbek Keldibekov

BISHKEK/ALMATY -- A new board is to be set up within the Kyrgyz parliament to assist Kyrgyz labor migrants in other countries, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Meeting in Almaty today with representatives of Kyrgyz workers permanently living in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz parliament speaker Akmatbek Keldibekov said the new board will be called the Public Council for Cooperation with Compatriots.

Leaders of Kyrgyz organizations and communities in Kazakhstan informed Keldibekov about the problems that Kyrgyz citizens regularly encounter when crossing the Kyrgyz-Kazakh border, opening and running businesses, and obtaining access to social services in Kazakhstan.

Keldibekov told the Kyrgyz labor migrants that he discussed those issues during his meetings with Kazakh officials. He said Kazakh parliament deputies and the prime minister "promised to work on solving as soon as possible all problems faced by Kyrgyz citizens permanently residing in Kazakhstan."

There are an estimated 60,000 Kyrgyz migrant workers currently in Kazakhstan.
