JALAL-ABAD, Kyrgyzstan -- The chief prosecutor in a southern Kyrgyz town was sacked today following criticism of his work by local residents, RFE/RL’s Kyrgyz Service reports.
Jalal-Abad Oblast Prosecutor-General Kanybek Turdumambetov told RFE/RL that the decision to dismiss the town of Maily-Suu's prosecutor, Mirlan Kojakmatov, was made due to his "poor performance."
On February 6, hundreds of people in Maily-Suu held a demonstration demanding that Kojakmatov, the police chief, and several investigators at the local Interior Ministry office be fired because they had ignored the worsening criminal situation in town.
Last week, Maily-Suu's Interior Ministry chief was fired from his post.
Maily-Suu has a population of some 20,000 people. The town was declared one of the 10-most polluted sites in the world in 2006 by the Blacksmith Institute due to quantities of toxic waste left from Soviet-era uranium mining and processing operations.
