Abasov's wife and their child, who were also in the car, are currently hospitalized in very serious condition.
The scene of the incident is currently cordoned off by police.
Investigators do not exclude that an explosive device had been planted in Abasov's car.
Abasov, aka Germes, won the world championship several times in recent years.
He has also won the European championship twice and was the Eurasian kickboxing champion in 2007.
