In Kyrgyzstan, events have been held marking five years since the overthrow of the country’s authoritarian president, Kurmanbek Bakiev. Speaking at a ceremony in Bishkek, the current Kyrgyz president, Almazbek Atambaev, said that only thanks to the uprising five years ago was it possible to establish a parliamentary democracy – the only one in Central Asia. Nearly 100 protestors were killed by Kyrgyz security forces before Bakiev fled to Belarus, which has rejected Kyrgyz requests to extradite him. (RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service)
