BISHKEK -- Some 500 protesters picketed the Kyrgyz government's headquarters in Bishkek today against the mayor's decision to demolish trade kiosks near a major market in the capital, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
RFE/RL's correspondent reports that the protesters demanded a meeting with President Roza Otunbaeva, Prime Minister Almazbek Atambaev, and the leader of the Ata-Jurt (Homeland) party faction in the parliament, Kamchybek Tashiev. Protesters say the Bishkek mayor's decision to demolish their kiosks outside the Osh market is illegal.
The mayor's press service told RFE/RL that the decision to demolish the kiosks was made to regulate trade in the area close to the Osh market.
According to the mayor's office, the kiosks, situated near the main gates to the market, have been set up illegally and the vendors do not pay taxes to the state and city treasuries.
