A senior official in Kyrgyzstan has suggested that authorities there are likely to seek a new extradition request for ousted former President Kurmanbek Bakiev, who fled to Belarus last year after a popular uprising, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Deputy Interior Minister Melis Turganbaev told a press conference that Kyrgyzstan was "very likely" to seek Bakiev's extradition for his alleged involvement in the 2009 murder of an influential political figure.
Kyrgyz authorities had initially said Medet Sadyrkulov and two others died in a traffic accident. But this week the Interior Ministry said Sadyrkulov was killed on the orders of Janysh Bakiev, the ousted president's brother and a former head of the presidential guard service.
Janysh Bakiev remains at large.
Under Kyrgyz law, the Prosecutor-General's Office would file any such international request.
Belarus has already declined requests for Kurmanbek Bakiev to be extradited over his alleged role in the killing of dozens of people when security forces tried to suppress the protests that brought his government down in April 2010, saying the extradition request was politically motivated.
