Life In Prison For Russian Ultranationalists

MOSCOW -- A Russian court on April 21 sentenced two ultranationalists to life in prison after convicting them of killing a Moscow judge.

The Moscow Region Court sentenced a third defendant, Mikhail Volkov, to 24 years in jail on the same charges.

Maksim Baklagin and Vyacheslav Isayev were found guilty of killing Moscow City Court judge Eduard Chuvashov in April 2010.

Their life sentences in a maximum-security prison were the most severe possible in Russia today.

The three are members of the so-called Combat Organization of Russian Nationalists (BORN). Another member of the organization, Yury Tikhomirov, was acquitted but is serving a 10-year prison sentence for the killing of an antifascist activist, Ilya Dzhaparidze.

BORN members Nikita Tikhonov and Yevgenia Khasis are serving sentences of life and 18 years, respectively, for killing human-rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov and reporter Anastasia Baburova in 2009.
