Lukashenka Does Not Rule Out Extradition Of Arrested Russian Executive

Russian potash executive Vladislav Baumgertner

Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka says he does not exclude the extradition of the general director of Russia's Uralkali potash-producing company.

Speaking at a session on economic and foreign policy on September 19, Lukashenka said that, if Russian authorities are ready to investigate the case in their country, he does not see any obstacles preventing Vladislav Baumgertner's extradition.

Baumgertner, a Russian citizen, was arrested in Minsk in late August and charged with abuse of office.

The move sparked tensions between Belarus and Russia.

Baumgertner was chairman of the Belarusian Potash Company (BKK), a now-defunct joint venture between Uralkali and a Belarusian potash firm, Belaruskali.

His announcement in July that Uralkali was leaving BKK led to a steep drop in the commodity's price, affecting the Belarusian economy.
