North Macedonia's Parliament Begins Debates Ahead Of Vote On New Government

North Macedonia's parliament on June 22 began debates ahead of voting on the formation of a new government in the NATO-member nation. The right-wing nationalist VMRO-DPMNE party won a clear victory in both presidential and parliamentary elections on May 9, raising concerns of colder relations with Balkan neighbors and more difficult membership negotiations with the European Union. In line to become prime minister after voting concludes on June 23 is Hristijan Mickoski, 46, a former professor who has vowed to continue North Macedonia's efforts to join the EU, although he has suggested he might seek a renegotiation of terms over issues relating to the small nation's ethnic Bulgarian minority, moves that likely would anger Sofia.
