Makhachkala Mayor Detained In Murder Probe

The mayor of the capital of Russia’s troubled Daghestan republic has been detained on suspicion of organizing the murder of a senior state investigator.

Russia’s Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said on June 1 that Mayor Said Amirov and 10 others have been detained in connection with the murder.

He said Amirov was being transported to Moscow for further questioning.

Local reports said armored personnel carriers and helicopters were used in the operation to carry out the arrests.

Daghestan is an ethnically mixed, mostly Muslim region between Chechnya and the Caspian Sea.

With militants there saying that they are fighting to carve an Islamic state out of southern Russia, it has become the most violent province in the North Caucasus.
