Man Charged Over Russian Schoolteacher Attack

NOVOSIBIRSK, Russia -- A man suspected of assaulting an elementary-school teacher in the west Siberian city of Novosibirsk has been officially charged with battery, hooliganism, and issuing death threats, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

A spokesperson for the Russian Prosecutor-General Office's Investigative Committee in Novosibirsk Oblast told journalists that police have handed over the case to the Investigative Committee.

Novosibirsk resident Denis Vozhenov is alleged to have hit a female teacher, Irina Isayeva, in front of pupils on December 3, threatening to kill her unless she stopped "deliberately marking down his step-daughter's grades."

Isayeva, 24, submitted her resignation without specifying the reason for her decision.

It is the second case of assault on a teacher in Russia in the last month. In November, a female teacher was severely beaten by a male assailant in front of her class in St. Petersburg. That case is still being investigated.
