More turmoil is expected in Greece as parliament votes today on the details of an unpopular austerity bill that needs to be approved to help that debt-laden country avoid bankruptcy.

Rioting and looting was reported in Athens on October 19 as protesters clashed with police during rallies against the government. Authorities said 50 police officers were injured.

Some 100,000 people were reported to have taken part in the October 19 rally in Athens.

Workers, meanwhile, were expected today to stage the second day of a general strike that a day earlier led to shutdowns in services in most of Greece, halting flights and ferries and closing offices, shops, and banks.

The demonstrations came as parliament was expected to give final approval today to the austerity plan that is a precondition for Greece to receive an 8 billion-euro installment from its European Union and International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout package and avoid bankruptcy.

Lawmakers on October 19 gave the bill initial approval.
