Rioting and looting was reported in Athens on October 19 as protesters clashed with police during rallies against the government. Authorities said 50 police officers were injured.

Workers, meanwhile, were expected today to stage the second day of a general strike that a day earlier led to shutdowns in services in most of Greece, halting flights and ferries and closing offices, shops, and banks.
The demonstrations came as parliament was expected to give final approval today to the austerity plan that is a precondition for Greece to receive an 8 billion-euro installment from its European Union and International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout package and avoid bankruptcy.
