Russia Launches More Deadly Missile Strikes Across Ukraine

Moscow launched a massive wave of missile strikes across Ukrainian regions, killing at least four civilians, wounding at least 40, and causing damage to infrastructure and economic facilities, Ukrainian officials and the military said.

Two people were killed in the Khmelnitskiy region, where at least six explosions that also caused damage to infrastructure facilities were reported on Telegram by the region's state administration.

 

Residents and rescuers worked through the morning to clear the rubble following the missile strike in Zmiyiv.

Numerous explosions were reported in the Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kryviy Rih, Khmelnitskiy, and Zaporizhzhya regions.

The early morning attack in Zmiyiv left behind a large crater and widespread destruction of civilian homes.

Ukraine said its air defenses had destroyed 18 out of 51 missiles, a much lower shoot-down rate than normal, which Kyiv attributed to the large number of ballistic missiles fired by Russia.

In Kryviy Rih, a 62-year-old was killed, and scores of private homes, apartment buildings, and this shopping center were damaged after nine Russian missiles slammed into the south-central city, according to Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul.

Nearly 15,000 residents were left without power as temperatures plummeted.

Five people were wounded in the attack in Zaporizhzhya, where Governor Yuriy Malashko said residential areas had been struck.

"Not a single military target," he wrote on Telegram.
 

The strikes came amid a cold snap sweeping Ukraine where temperatures in Zaporizhzhya hovered between minus 2 and minus 11 degrees Celsius.

In the western Khmelnytskiy region, local officials reported two people were killed during the early morning attack on critical infrastructure.

Russia launched another massive wave of hypersonic and cruise missiles against Ukraine on January 8. Ukrainian officials said Moscow launched 51 missiles, 18 of which were shot down. At least four people were killed and dozens were injured, according to the authorities.
