Pakistani Courts Grant, Reject Musharraf Bail In Separate Cases

Former President and head of the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) political party Pervez Musharraf (right) is escorted by security officials as he leaves an antiterrorism court in Islamabad in April.

In Pakistan, one court has granted bail while another has refused it to former military leader Pervez Musharraf in separate cases.

An Islamabad court granted Musharraf bail on June 11 in a case related to the detention of senior judges in 2007.

Earlier in the day, another court in the southwestern province of Balochistan refused Musharraf bail because of his failure to appear for a trial in connection with the August 2006 killing of Baluch politician Nawab Akbar Bugti in a military operation.

Last month, Musharraf was granted bail in another case related to the murder of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

He is accused of failing to provide adequate security for Bhutto, who was killed in December 2007.

Musharraf has been in detention at his residence outside Islamabad since April 19.
