Armenia’s Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian said on May 26 that his country’s armed forces and ethnic Armenian separatist fighters in Azerbaijan’s breakaway Nnagorno-Karabakh region have been fulfilling agreements recently reached by the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The May 16 agreements between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian were aimed at strengthening a shaky cease-fire and to try to relaunch peace talks on Nagorno-Karabakh.
In addition to the cease-fire pledges by Aliyev and Sarkisian, the two presidents also agreed during face-to-face talks in Vienna to increase the size of a cease-fire monitoring mission run by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
The current OSCE mission has only six observers on the ground.
Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian met on May 26 with Andrzej Kasprzyk, the personal representative of the OSCE chairperson in office.
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov is due to meet with mediators from the OSCE in Brussels on May 31.
Nalbandian is due to meet with the mediators in Paris on June 2.
